  • Social Emotional Learning Environment

    Funded Mar 10, 2018

I just wanted to take the time to thank you again for contributing to my Donors Choose project several months ago. I was able to purchase many objects for the classroom that have allowed students to learn in a more relaxed and productive environment. Some of the items include a large, comfortable chair, futon, softer lighting, and many pillows. I was able to create a comfortable corner of the room that is semi-secluded so students can study and learn in a stress-free environment. The new desktop fountain also offers a feeling of serenity.

When the students saw all of these changes to the classroom, they were over the moon. Students were excited to come to math class because it meant they had the freedom to work as they wanted. Some still enjoy working at a desk, but now they have a choice.

The best part is, not only did you help last year's students, but all the students for years to come. I can't thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Edwards

  • Social Emotional Learning Environment II

    Funded Mar 21, 2018

Thank you so much for your more than generous donations! I can't tell you how much I, and my students appreciate it. The students are already really excited about the upcoming changes to the classroom. I know that the alternative seating and other calming features will help them immensely. Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Edwards

Our district, grounded in science-based research, is emphasizing the the education of the "whole student". This means that students should feel free to express themselves in every subject and find both creativity and grit in their learning. Classrooms that enable a creative and stress-free setting will benefit students in reaching their academic and personal potential. Stress from the traditional class setting can be reduced, thus facilitating an environment in which students can be free to learn and grow. Perseverance in tasks can be achieved through an inviting learning setting. Lamps that give off a softer light than the fluorescents, pillows that students can sit on for alternate seating, a fountain for a calming sound in the room, and a rug space sectioned with hanging beads to provide a place where students can sit and discuss mathematics are all items that help to create a classroom that is more attune to the students' needs. Every student, from the lowest readiness level to the highest can benefit from a focus on social emotional learning. This doesn't mean there is a de-emphasis on curriculum content or focus on academic standards. Creating a more inviting classroom simply enhances the opportunities for students to fully explore each concept in a way that allows for greater understanding through a more authentic examination.
