  • Facilitating Hands-on Design-based Exploration while Learning Online.

    Funded Nov 16, 2020

Thank you so much for providing my science scholars with a meaningful way to explore our energy and motion units with a hands-on, design-based experience. My freshmen learners have LOVED the opportunity to step away from the screens and design, plan, build and analyze the fun and dynamic coasters they have created!

The unit is almost done but the fun is still going strong. I have received several coaster images and videos. This week my students will analyze and record the motion of their marbles and properties of their coasters and calculate the physics parameters that facilitate a safe and thrilling coaster experience. Then they will present their coasters in a video presentation.

My students have all expressed how much fun this project has been and how much they appreciated the contributions of you, our generous donors. Pictures will be coming soon! I hope you enjoy watching my students achieve authentic and meaningful tactile learning even when the pandemic has minimized our ability to implement project-based learning in the classroom. Without your generosity, this would not have been possible for our scholars and I am so thankful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Alloy Engineering and Manufacturing

    Funded Feb 27, 2019

Thank you so much for your support of authentic real-world learning in my science classroom. Your donation allowed my science students to fabricate and treat alloys and alloy-based products, and to learn about an important manufacturing process called electroplating when we zinc-plated pennies and then used heat treatment to create brass. My students were able to truly appreciate the connection between science content and the products that we use and enjoy everyday.

The materials that your generous gift have supplied to my classroom will continue to provide my students opportunity for learning year after year. This year the disruption to classroom learning meant that our planned fourth quarter projects were cut short. Next year my students will truly explore metal alloy casting and learn about the centuries old technique of sand casting. I cannot wait to share this timeless blend of materials science and art with my students. I will share their original work with you as soon as I have the opportunity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Project-Based Physics with Paper Roller Coasters!

    Funded Dec 30, 2018

Your contribution to our physical science classroom has had a tremendous impact on our energy conversion and forces and motion unit this year. My students used the donated cardstock, and art supplies to design and construct their unique and "epic" roller coasters. Today they are analyzing the physical forces acting on their marble roller coasters and at the end of this week, they will present their final designs and data to the class as well as several faculty members as part of a simulated marketing campaign for a coaster build at Cedar Point.

My scholars have thoroughly enjoyed this project. The project has been so engaging that many of them have worked on their coasters outside of class time. The project truly embodies our school focus on engineering and has helped my students explore these important physics concepts in a hands-on and exciting way. Science is so much fun and this project has truly given my students the opportunity to experience the role these forces play in something they all love.

Without your generous support, this project would not have been a possibility. The cost of supplies is one of the biggest limiting factors in education and your donations have eliminated this ceiling and helped my students to reach new heights. I hope you enjoy the photos and find as much reward in their success as I do.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

This classroom project was brought to life by Someone Who Cares and 2 other donors.
My students are driven by creative and engaging exploration. Creating and designing unique paper roller coasters will help them explore physics concepts like work, conservation of energy and engineering considerations in a meaningful, project-based way. The students will spend several days designing, building and modifying their coasters. They will then pit their coasters against their classmates in a competition that will motivate them to build the highest, fastest, and most exhilarating coasters for their marbles. They will also earn extra points for creativity and aesthetics! Consumables like cardstock, tape, glue and markers are costly and can really add up. These items are often not considered because many classrooms provide these materials; however, in our high needs district these normal supplies are often unavailable. Furthermore, all of our students are low-income and parents are unable to provide extra supplies for the classroom. A project like this requires a large amount of these consumables as well as enough scissors for students to all be working in their teams to build their coasters. Giving the students a lot of color options will help them "buy in" to the project as they apply their own unique twists to their designs. Any materials that are not used by this years students will be invested into next years budding engineers and scientists.
