My students need lock boxes, locks, spy kits, and puzzles for their breakout boxes because these materials will allow them to race against the clock to solve complex science problems that have to do with the periodic table, types of energy, forces and motion, engineering, astronomy, and so much more. The locks, puzzles, and spy kits that I am requesting will allow my students to dive deeper into science concepts by allowing them hands on practice with their problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. Student groups of 3-4 students will work together to solve the puzzles and to break the codes that will open each of their locks, and each student will bring unique skills to each challenge. Student groups will then combine their "breakout" findings from each of their lock boxes to solve a larger class challenge that will emphasize science concepts, engineering skills, and ask students to use their higher order thinking skills. These breakout boxes will allow me to differentiate within my classroom by providing a variety of puzzles, mazes, riddles, challenges etc., and they will allow for active participation and an active learning environment.
Students will be given the opportunity to "break out" of their ordinary science routines by exercising their imagination, curiosity, critical thinking skills, and science content knowledge, and hopefully these experiences will stay with them for many years to come. I want to go beyond the expectations of everyday experiences by allowing my students to make real world connections, and by opening their minds to developing their own pathways of learning.
I am excited to bring movement, excitement, rigor, and new approaches of science learning to my students and to my classroom. These Breakout boxes will give students a new platform for scientific inquiry and a new appreciation for determination and teamwork.
