My students will learn about what countries make up each continent , they will use latitude and longitude coordinates for location, and will be asked to use dry erase markers to find a city, state, ocean, country, etc. These materials will help my students to develop a better understanding of the world in which they live. It will make learning "map skills” easier to understand. Moving to this new school in Mobile, Alabama, I found they did not have any desktop maps for the students; I can see thus far that the children haven’t responded well to their map skills as well as I would like them to. I attribute this deficit to not having a map of their own to follow along with. I have found through the use of the desktop maps that my students could reason and defend decisions when asked to use the maps for locating a designated point then explaining the reason for their decision. The above skills further build their knowledge of map elements. This project is integral to our Social Studies learning this year. By not having these map resources available in my classroom it is very difficult to meet our state and city learning goals. These maps will aid us in our most basic function of social studies learning so that we can meet, and exceed, the Alabama State Standards in grade 7 Social Studies this year, and for years to come. I sincerely hope that you will consider helping to fund this proposal to help make my classroom the best!
