Our county has a terrific reading curriculum that focuses on the collaborative classroom and learning. Each reading unit, the students are assigned a partner for discussions and brainstorming. These partners sit together on a carpet in front of the teacher who shares a book. The students turn and talk about story which was read and share their thoughts with one another. The program focuses on students having meaningful discussions. This in turn creates stronger speakers. It also creates a strong community in the classroom where students are taught to use respect and honor one another's thoughts as well as learning styles. We have really noticed a difference in the students at our school and the way they are able to communicate and respect one another's thinking. These lessons are so valuable as the students learn to collaborate and respect their classmates thoughts and ideas. All of this learning takes place on the carpet. As of now, I have attached two carpets together to create one big carpet for my 22 students (per class) to fit on. These carpets are starting to come apart and often slide out of place on the tile floor. I would love to provide a more comfortable area for my students to learn in. My students take such pride in their classroom. They would be so proud to have a new addition.
