I started collecting books for my classroom library almost a decade before I was offered my first teaching job. I was so excited to eventually share my love for reading and learning with my students. I now have a fantastic set of read alouds to match a lot of themes/genres throughout the school year. My students LOVE digging through my cracking bins of books that are organized by topic. While most of the covers of my books are missing or held together with packing tape, they are still well loved in our kindergarten classroom. The downfall is, these are books that my students love but often cannot read. The reading level is too high for a majority so they often look at the pictures, make up their own stories or find words that they do know in the books.
A classroom-leveled library will provide opportunities for all of my students to have access to books at their instructional and independent reading level all year long. The leveled guided reading books that we do have in our classroom are limited and not always available for students to access. With the clearly marked leveled bins, students will become independent in selecting a book of their interest. Creating a positive learning space that students can thrive in is all about giving choices, remember? These bins (and 5 book starter kits) will provide a range of reading levels to ensure there is a “just right” book for every student in my class. The extra set of matching bins will allow me to level some of my own books so students can continue to enjoy those as well.
