50% of all mental health challenges start by age 14, and 75% by the age of 24. It takes on average 11 years from the onset of symptoms until an individual will seek treatment. As such, the Coalinga Huron Unified School District recognizes that they are on the front line of supporting student mental health issues facing students, particularly in rural communities such as Coalinga and Huron. Additionally, being a rural and socio-economically disadvantaged community, there are limited resources to deploy for student wellness. Therefore, CHUSD is implementing Wellness Centers on multiple sites to support School-Based Mental Health services for students and families. The idea is to contribute to a safe, brave, and welcoming space to allow students to connect with mental health services and the resources they need while creating a space that welcomes all students on campus to seek help, particularly when in crisis.
