My desire is for my classroom to be a place where everyone can be successful. Through observing my students my first year of teaching, I noticed that I had a lot of students that just weren’t able to sit at a desk and be fully engaged.
From my desire, I adjusted my classroom design last year. Over the course of the school year I added cushions for floor seats, a couple of yoga balls, etc... I allowed the students to have a say in their education and find out how they learn best and how where the sit can impact that. I found that every student was different. What seat they thought they would like best wasn’t always the best for them. I had some students that needed to be able to move around, some that preferred to sit up higher, some that liked to sit on the floor. The students were always most engaged when I would sit with them on the floor during small group instruction, even in 6th grade!
I also noticed that when I added pillows near the class library students were more likely to read a book during their free time, which was a big win.
I would like to continue this project this year with high quality seating options in the reading corner, and other seating options that will really allow my students to focus and feel comfortable in our classroom.
