Listening to audio books is an excellent way to promote literacy in the classroom. Audio books help all readers from struggling readers to on- grade level and advanced readers. These audio books help to increase vocabulary in English and Spanish. The students will be listening to audio books both in their native Spanish language as well as English. In addition to vocabulary, audio books help students increase comprehension skills which is a skill that is lacking in many students in my classroom. They can read a book but most of the time, they cannot retell you the story. The audio books are read at such a fluent level that it also provides an excellent model of what reading should sound like. My students have access to 4-5 I-pads in the classroom, but no headphones. I try to spread them out in the classroom but I often find that the audio books are distracting to the other students working in other stations. If the students lower the volume, then they are struggling to hear the story themselves or they are forced to bring the I-pad close to their ears. These headphones will be such a big help because now the students can listen clearly without having to worry about interrupting the students around them that are working in other stations.
