It is our school's mission that all students are entitled to appropriate, authentic, and stimulating learning experiences that will maximize their independence and quality of life. We provide services for students with Autism, learning disabilities, and multiple disabilities. Despite huge hurdles to overcome, our students are eager to learn each and every day.
Having a MacBook will allow my students to access technology-based lessons across various school settings.
My students are highly motivated by technology, and as a speech provider, I use their love of technology to promote access to educational materials and social opportunities. I work with 5 or more classes each year that serve students with both cognitive and physical challenges. I provide speech services in the classrooms and my therapy room, which are equipped with apple-based technology.
Many of my students have physical disabilities that make it difficult to move around the classroom or use their hands to access a computer. We are lucky to already have buttons, switches, and other computer adapters that make it easier for our students to access the internet and web-based books in their classrooms. For example, they can hit a switch and navigate the internet, or turn the page of a book from anywhere in the room (via bluetooth). However, I cannot quickly and effectively set these lessons up as I move between classes, model them for teachers, or bring them to teachers who don't have this technology. This MacBook will allow me to quickly connect to these accessibility systems in EVERY classroom, as well as my therapy room, giving my students with physical limitations the ability to access instruction.
