My students will be in a gifted 2nd grade classroom. Most of them are already reading at a 3rd grade level, and some at beginning 4th grade levels. Therefore, I need a variety of books that begin with 2nd grade reading levels and span all the way to 5th grade, to accommodate all reading abilities in my classroom, from the beginning to the end of the school year. Every primary classroom needs a variety of books, not only to accommodate varying levels of reading ability, but that also take into consideration cultural relevancy and student interest. For these reasons, I have not only included multiple leveled readers, but a variety of other books to begin building a classroom library. It is also important that students receive high-quality, differentiated math instruction. Therefore, I have included a professional development book that offers ideas about how to develop math centers to both meet individual student needs, as well as keep all students engaged. Further, it is important to help build community with a student-lead morning meeting each day, so I have included a book that has ideas for that.
