At my high school, we are trying to institute a school-wide reading program. However, we do not have enough engaging, meaningful books in our library to get a book in every student's hands. Our student population is 2,500, and 50% of our students receive some form of financial aid. We cannot ask all students to purchase books as many are simply unable to at this time. My mission is to get all students reading at the start of the 18-19 school year with the hope that we will have books to fulfill this opportunity. Crime rates in the area, along with poverty, are larger than many of the surrounding areas. As a member of the new reading committee, I have conducted research and recognize that the best way for students to remain in good standing while becoming ethical, high achieving members of society is to invest in their education. I feel there is no better way for students to understand themselves, the world around them, and how an education can advance them towards their American dream than by fostering a love for reading while the students attend our high school. I have specifically researched and chosen books that I know will engage and change the lives of my student population for my project, and I am extremely excited to help my students read in ways they never have in an educational setting.
