Remote Learning Support for Students With Disabilities
Funded Sep 21, 2020This school year had a delayed start and many of us are participating in full time remote learning. Having headsets adds to the experience of the Google meets and other online learning platforms such as Peardeck and Google slides.
We are learning to be flexible and incorporating multimedia into every lesson in order to extend the work time and rigor to the lessons. Students are expanding their digital literacy and learning to communicate through their preferred mode of communication.
This includes communication devices such as an Ipad. In addition, they use their words and gestures. They are learning to act out or demonstrate their knowledge in the meets.
It's an exciting time and we truly appreciate your support in order to make this all happen. The students' knowledge is deepening every day thanks to you.”

This classroom project was brought to life by AT&T and 6 other donors.Students Tell Their Quarantine Story.
Funded May 6, 2020Well, the care packages were a great success and continue to be beneficial for the students in this coming year. Take a look at the Staten Island Live article: https://www.silive.com/coronavirus/2020/06/good-news-staten-islanders-continue-outpouring-of-support-during-pandemic.html
Many of the students worked over the summer to create sunprints to tell their quarantine story through photographs. Take a look at the demonstration video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxUWQOST5S8
It's a great project and we are still excited by the possibilities as time goes on, there are a lot of opportunities to the kids to submit and share their work. The pandemic has brought about interest in the community for the students to share their stories and we hope to pursue exhibitions and public displays of their great work.
So, thank you for your support and feel free to continue to stay connected to our us, our projects, and the photography program at the Hungerford school.”

In School Exhibition.
Funded Mar 20, 2019Through your generous donations, this project erected an in-school photography exhibition in the hallway. The students were so proud to display their photography artwork and share with the larger school community.
This part of the arts program is crucial. Students are able to present their work and by doing this strengthen and find their voice. The key to self-expression is being able to share with the community.
We appreciate all of the support through donor's choose.
We would not be able to offer arts enrichment programming like this one if it were not for your support. Thank you!”

Student Photography Exhibit - Empowering Students Through Art
Funded May 18, 2016Well, thanks to your generous donations and support. Many people not only gave money but also their time by sharing the project with friends and family and helping fundraising.
This has been an extremely successful year. Our data shows that our student developed enormously in all subject areas thanks to using photography as a tool for learning and communication.
So, we hope you will join us on June 15th from 6 - 8 PM at the Pepper Jack Grill on Manor Road in Staten Island! This is the opening reception for the exhibit titled: Communicating Through Photography in a Nonverbal World. The students have created 25 eight by ten images. These photos are now framed in beautiful 11 x 14 black wooden frames with mattes.
We hope you can attend the opening or check out the exhibit some time after it opens. Take a look at the wonderful work our students completed thanks to you and your help.”

Communicating Through Photography in a Non-Verbal World
Funded Mar 23, 2016I want to thank you for your generous donation so that class v13 now has it's very own MacBook! The classroom project is underway and has been a great success thus far. The students have been taking photographs with cameras and iPads. They have been printing them out and presenting them to their peers. They are learning how to download the images to the laptop and how to edit the images. In June we will participate in the school wide film festival and the laptop is a crucial piece of equipment to complete this project.
Most importantly, I am enrolled in the NEW program - New Educators at Wagner College. I have created this action research project: Communicating Through Photography in a Nonverbal World. I identified challenges, made some positive changes, empowered the students by giving them lots of freedom (following Glasser's theory)...all along with teaching the core subjects through photography.
We went on some great class trips, the students learned how to use photography as a tool for communication and captured they some powerful images. These images will be on exhibit at the Pepper Jack Grill located at 316 Manor Road. For more information visit: http://pjgrill.com/
The opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday evening June 15th from 6 - 9 PM, please join us and view our exhibition, "Communicating Through Photography in a Nonverbal World."
We are really looking forward to sharing our hard work with the community. Thank you again for making all of this exciting work possible. Also, check out our current project that is open for donations to cover the frames and cost of the exhibit. Please share all of this with your friends and network.”

Funded Dec 15, 2015Thank you for your generosity and support.
For the last few months, our class has had the pleasure of using the photo printer, ink and papers in our class. These items have made my vision of teaching the core subject through photography.
This approach engages multiple learning styles and is interdisciplinary. For example, the students have learned math, literacy and social justice through photography lessons. One particular favorite lesson was the students photographed geometric shapes. They made measurements of the real world shapes, photographed the shapes and made enlargements. They then took those enlarged images of the shapes and made comparisons. You see, now they were able to understand what the definition of the word similar. This lesson combines literacy, math and photography.
The kids in my class really enjoy this approach to learning and it was made possible by your donations.
Thank you is an understatement.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Google.org and 5 other donors.iPad Technology For Students With Disabilities
Funded Dec 2, 2015This week, we received the Ipads that you generously gave donations toward. I was able to download apps that are specific to our curriculum. The students are able to individualize their learning with these apps. Since the class has a variety of needs, giving them time to work on the Ipads and work individualize their learning is critical to their development.
The school provided us with a subscription to Raz kids which has a leveled reading program. The students enjoy books (on the Ipads) read to them and then they can record their voice while reading their book. They can send me the recording for assessment. They can also complete a reading comprehension quiz at the end of the book. For example, one student Dustin has moved up an entire reading level and has earned 10,600 stars within the app. I am so proud of him.
I'm working to develop a new project called Communicating Through Photography in a Non-verbal World. This project aims for the students to learn the core subjects through photography. I've designed lessons so that the students can take photographs with the Ipads, print them out and make real world connections. For example: photograph geometric shapes then measure the printed photograph of the shape and make comparisons to the real world geometric shape.
Having these Ipads in the class has already proved to be invaluable and the possibilities are limitless.
Thank you for making this a reality. We are planning an exhibition at the Pepper Jack Grill in May or June to showcase the work the students are creating with these Ipads. So stay tuned....and thank you again!”

This classroom project was brought to life by Google.org and 15 other donors.Technology for Students with Disabilities
Funded Oct 16, 2015We in v13 have had several weeks with the Ipad. We are using literacy and math apps that align with the curriculum that we are using in class such as Attainment. We are also using an app called Raz kids. The app reads books at the student's reading level, then the student is able to read the book back and record their voice. It has already increased many of the student's reading levels. Also, we see a noticeable difference in their verbal abilities!
Students use the Ipad in small group activities and individually. We have found it to be so successful that we are asking for an additional two Ipads. Here is the link to the project page, please share with anyone you think would want to support: http://www.donorschoose.org/project/ipad-technology-for-students-with-disabi/1762103/?rf=link-siteshare-2015-12-teacher-teacher_3219154&challengeid=20669724
Google is currently matching the donations for this project. Thank you for your support. We truly appreciate all your generosity!”
