Under the Sea Theme Visual Art Supplies
Funded Aug 15, 2023We are working hard to create art to support our theatre program thanks to your generous donations. We received the under the sea art supplies. The students were so excited! The theme of the supplies is perfect for the needs of our school because this year's school play is Moana! Only a select few students get to act, sing and dance in the play but now we have been able to open the opportunity up to our visual art students. This allows for our students to engage in a new way with our theatre program. It's especially powerful for our students who are wheelchair bound or non verbal.”

Funded Sep 26, 2023I am delighted to write to you today to inform you that my students have created their photo books. They are beginning to start fill them with photographs as well as their drawings and writings.
We are following Wendy Ewald's framework that's foundation is that the students create photographs and write about them. This may look different for our students with disabilities.
We have sentence strips with visual picture symbols to modify the writing aspects of the lessons in addition to offering them with a multiple choices to express themselves.”

Funded May 12, 2023Now that we have completed our school year, I want to take a moment to share how our Donorschoose funded project impacted my students. Students were delighted to share their hard work with their families and their class community. A little peek into a bright spot during classroom time is when a student called out to the rest of the class, "Let's all have a round of applause" for his classmate. This became a daily routine when students shared their work at the end of the class time.
In addition, all of my students were able to bring their artwork home during the last week of school. This was all possible due to the generosity of your donations. Thank you!”

Funded Jan 13, 2023It is with great pleasure that I write to you about the project that you generously have donated to. My students and I are extremely grateful to you for your support. We have been using our new cameras, memory cards and hole punch on a daily basis. We celebrated Black History Month and Women's History Month by creating self-portraits and adding them to a scene we created of the Montgomery Bus Line with Rosa Parks or the schoolhouse with Ruby Bridges. The students played various roles to re-enact the historic events after learning about these important African American women.
We also learned about local women artists and created works of art in response and with inspiration of their body of works. We focused on women who show at the Art on the Terrace gallery where we will be exhibiting our own work in May. This is all thanks to your contribution.”

Mirrors for Dance Program
Funded Nov 30, 2022It is with gratitude that I write to you. Our dance mirrors have been delivered and assembled by our wonderful custodial staff. The dancers are enjoying them and are preparing for our school play scheduled later this year.
The school play is one of the school's favorite days of the year. This year actors and dancers are performing Willie Wonka! This would be a much more difficult task if it wasn't for our mirrors that enhanced our dance program so much so that the program has expanded to a new larger classroom rehearsal space!
This would not be possible without your generous support!”

Funded Oct 23, 2022Well, we have finished making our books for the most part. Some students have a few finishing touches left but we created a 16 page hand made book with photos and writings. Students included photographs of themselves at various activities and events that have taken place throughout the school year. We also created themed projects. For example one day we made sunprints. Another day we photographed geometric shapes. Students used their communication devices to talk about composition and used scaffolding techniques to describe their images. For example they used picture symbols and sentence strips.
There are various contests, competitions and exhibitions that we will be applying for but in May we will have an exhibit on Richmond
Terrace. Thank you for your continued support!”

Funded Sep 29, 2022Yesterday a reporter from a news outlet showed up looking to do an article on our new school building and requested photographs. Well guess what? We now have a professional DSLR to capture our students and facility in magazine worthy high quality resolution for print publication! This is thanks to you and your generous support!

Funded Aug 9, 2022Well, we have moved to our new school building and have a photography classroom for the very first time ever! We have been able to decorate the room with photos the students have taken and their portraits. We worked on a project called the Best Part of Me. This is inspired by photographer and educator Wendy Ewald and her published book and curriculum. Students explore poetry and literacy skills through photography. They choose their favorite body part and take a pic of it. Then they create a poem about what it helps them do and describe it.
We then started a book project where each student is making their own handmade photography book with their pictures and writings. We will collect all of the work and exhibit it in the school art show and at a community gallery in May 2023. Please stay tuned. You can follow us on Instagram and Facebook at thehungerfordschool721r. We look forward to sharing our work with you and appreciate all of your support and generosity.”

Funded Sep 24, 2021Thanks to your support we have made great progress for the 1st and 2nd term of this school year. We are looking forward to the rest of the year and here are some things that we have been able to do because of you.
Recently, the our school's administrator observed a lesson and here's what he said: "The students were given a laminated vocabulary sheet titled, "Why Do We Recycle?" with 27 words with picture symbols adapted from the Unique curriculum. This sheet was used to support the students and was referenced throughout the lesson. The sheet was also color coded and you mentioned several times pointing to the nouns, verbs and adjectives." These laminated color visual supports are a common tool used in our lessons and this is made possible by your generous donation.
In addition, we are excited about the integration of photography in our science instruction. We are also providing opportunities for literacy interdisciplinary connections. For example, picture symbols are printed out and place throughout the school. The students engage in scavenger hunts finding the vocab words and taking photos of them. Our students are engaged and making great progress. Thanks again.”

Funded Jun 29, 2021This was an exciting unit that was made possible by your generous donation. I was able to create manipulative binders with color printed and laminated activities that incorporated weather and literacy. Each morning we worked in these binders that went over today's date, the weather and appropriate clothing for the weather. The kids loved this routine to start their day and to help with issues associated with transitioning due to their disabilities.
We extended these activities in the school garden to increase engagement. Being able to go outside and work in the yard helped us to work on their needs and behaviors. We created a bulletin board in the classroom illustrating the interdisciplinary approach connecting science and art to literacy.
The Hungerford staff and myself want to thank you for your support. It made a difference in their education in helping them to stay engaged and meeting their needs.”
