These students are passionate about diving in to the horrors and human atrocities of life around the world. We examine issues like poverty, homelessness, human trafficking, refugees, child soldiers, the water crisis, hunger, factory farming, incarceration, racism, mental health, and the treatment of women - to name a few. In addition to submerging themselves into these issues, students take their need for social justice and apply it into our community. Each week during class students invest in and volunteer at a local organization; we partner with two nursing homes, a no-kill animal shelter, a food bank, a women's safe house, an elementary school, and a center for autistic children. It's in these moments of applying the empathy that we discuss in class that I really see change and passion grow in my students. There is nothing more powerful than seeing an 17 year old boy feed a 90 year old woman lunch, gently wiping her chin after each bite. My students inspire me every day.
