My retained 3rd graders are working so hard every day to work towards passing Ohio's Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Ohio's Third Grade Reading Guarantee is a program to identify students from kindergarten through grade 3 that are behind in reading. Schools will provide help and support to make sure students are on track for reading success by the end of third grade. This program is effective but can bring a lot of stress to the students. It is important that they have access to a wide variety of literature across different genres and styles. More importantly, my students need access to literature that will captivate them and make them excited about reading. Our current classroom library is made up of older used books, many of which are falling apart or outdated. I work at a Title One school without enough funding to update my classroom library on my own. These kids are hardworking and passionate about doing thier best in school. They deserve the very best and this is one small way I can give that to them. The books I have chosen for my project will EXCITE my students about reading. These books will help build reading stamina, fluency, and comprehension that they need to succeed. I will use these books for guided reading groups, book clubs, buddy reading, independent reading, literature circles, and monthly reading projects. My students will be able to choose books that interest them at their own reading levels. This project will enhance their reading experiences in and out of the classroom.
