  • Creating Culture Through Mindfulness

    Funded Feb 25, 2025

Thank you again for making this project a reality. The students received their mindfulness journals and now every day in class, the five to ten minutes is dedicated to them doing a page in their journals. This has led to students practicing breathing, stepping back, increasing their writing stamina, and opening up more as they are able to take a few minutes for themselves each day. It has only been three days, but I can see the students are happier coming to class knowing they are going to get a few minutes to decompress from their day. This has also resulted in them being more engaged in the lesson.

The iPad had been a tremendous help as students are sharing the device for research when looking up historical images related to the poems we are reading, or logging in to their Zoom session for their online college course. Everyone has been collegial in sharing and the students are appreciative of having a device that does not lag or get stuck.

Fourth Wing just came in yesterday and I will be working with the ELA teachers to see if we can create a small book club. Your generosity has breathed life into my classes and I am eternally grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jackson

  • Pajama Party!

    Funded Apr 13, 2024

Thank you for providing pajamas to students in need. Your generosity allowed students who are living in shelters and are doubled up or more to have clothes to wear at night and be fully covered. In addition, you ensured student are able to stay warm at night.

As you may know, New York City has had an influx of new arrivals, and my school has welcomed over 60 students from families that have come to the United States for hopes of something better. Some of our students are transient and are only with us for a short while as their caregivers seek employment and a way to provide for their family.

Thank you for putting students first.”

  • Building Bridges Through Literature

    Funded Dec 7, 2023

Thank you so much for creating the opportunity for book clubs at my school. Due to your generosity, groups of students will be able to enhance their literacy by participating in a book club of their choosing. Providing books students want to engage in is the first step in creating a love of reading. You are a difference maker!

Literacy and a love of reading pushes students to think more deeply, not just about the book, but what is going on around us. Book clubs are automatic discussion starters that result in students asking questions and therby creating engaged citizens who can become change agents in their school and community.”

  • Cozying up to Halloween

    Funded Oct 3, 2023

Your generosity and support provided and opportunity for students to not only be warm during those cool fall days, but also allowed students to share in the Fall festival and Halloween with the school community. Student received the hoodies and were able to connect to the Nightmare Before Christmas movie (some had never seen it before!).

Our school has received close to 40 New Arrivals (Asylum Seekers) since last year and as the weather dips below freezing we still have students coming to school in the hoodies you provided and nothing else. We are now working on getting coats and winter gear for these same students.

Your donation was the first step in ensuring all students at our school are warm and included in school events. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jackson

  • Get in the Game

    Funded Jan 17, 2023

Our school is participating in the Literacy Collaborative, a 3 year initiative to strengthen literacy, and your contribution has made it possible to successfully implement the STARI Reading Program with two groups of students.

The students in these two classes focus on fluency and comprehension, and The Game is a high interest book that ensures the students are in the class building on their reading skills.

As they build on fluency, they also work on speaking and writing, and because of your donation, we are ensuring equity and closing gaps so that our students are able to be college and career ready when they leave high school.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jackson

  • Sweat and Cover

    Funded Jan 1, 2023

Over the past several weeks we have welcomes over 20 Asylum Seekers and their families to our school community. For these students, it is the first time they are experiencing a cold winter, and living in a shelter, the students are in need of winter clothing. Thank you to you, and other donors, we have been able to provide coats and sweats to students, ensuring they have something warm to wear on their way to and from school.

Your generosity is beyond words because as a mother and educator, I cannot imagine not being able to provide and ensure my children are kept warm during these cold days. You have helped families give their children something they could not- and for that, I thank you.”

  • An Orchard of Learning

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

Thanks to your generous gift, students are able to access multiple apps, and learn the apple platform as the school only has Chromebooks. Recently our school has had 12 Asylum Seekers join the school community and the iPads allow the students to start to learn technology they may not have been exposed to in their home countries.

Students are also able to borrow the iPads to do work at home when they cannot use their phone or have access to other technology, so you have enabled students to complete assignments they otherwise may not have been able to do. Thank you for supporting my students!”

  • Chef Ahoy!

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

Because of you our students have a cooking club that meets every Tuesday afternoon and the students proudly cook food that everyone can smell in the hallway. I have been fortunate to be a tester and I now know that no matter the path these students take, they will have the ability to cook for themselves and loved ones.

In addition, our students, who are mostly Dominican are trying out recipes outside of the foods they have grown up with, and so are expanding their own pallettes.

You have enabled a group of teenagers to become one step closer to self-sufficiency.”

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us." -- Albert Schweitzer My students have yet to find that spark and my goal is to help light the flame within each individual so they can see their own potential.
