One of the most motivating tools we have for fostering independent, lifelong learning is carefully selected literature. Careful selection is so important, because one thing all these very different kids have in common is a selective relationship with literature - most will be reluctant readers until they find the books that speak to them, either through whole-group reading lessons or through independent exploration. The joy and sense of empowerment they feel when they find a book or series of books they connect with and feel motivated to read is powerful - and it’s contagious! Hands down, nothing else ignites a love of reading more effectively for this age group! This project contains several text sets that have proven themselves to be powerful motivators for 4th grade readers at our school. For this project, I am focused on familiar favorites like Harry Potter, and beloved graphic novel sets like Raina Telgemeier's, because accessibility and familiarity are two of the most crucial inroads for independent reading. Currently, my classroom library is almost entirely made up of out of date or lower interest books donated by other teachers. I have a few newer and more engaging titles I've tried to provide on my own, but my library really needs a pretty significant overhaul! My students and I will be ever grateful for your support in filling our shelves with books 4th graders are excited to read!
