As a first year teacher you are constantly learning and making changes as you apply this learning in your own classroom. During my center rotations I only see a few students at a time, which means the rest are required to work with a partner or independently. What I have come to realize is that during this time, it can be hard for some students to remain engaged and on task without constant reminders and someone sitting next to them giving them these redirection. I want my students to be able to practice the skills and concepts that we learn as a whole class, on their own. In order for them to do this, I need help putting together a listening center for them. This will allow my groups to listen to a classic, and entertaining, story while also following along with the book right in front of them. They will be able to practice skills such as discovering the main idea, problem and solutions, determining text importance, making predictions and inferences, etc., all while following along and being engaged in a good book. I am hoping by my students having this opportunity, they will be able to build a love for reading and various types of books and stories. It will be a fun way for them to practice decoding words, engaging in discussions regarding the book, and practice their reading and comprehension skills.
