Imagine being in high-school and not being able to read and comprehend texts like your friends. This is how a lot of our Special Education/Resource students feel. They look, act, and sound just like their same-age peers but lack foundational skills to be an on-level reader. Because of this lack of reading ability, they are not able to access and comprehend novels like their friends. High-interest, low readability books have been created and selected for students of all ages and ability levels to be able to access age-appropriate books that meet literature standards. Being able to have several classroom sets of high-low books will allow our Special Education English department to have several choices when it comes to novel studies, essays, and comprehension assignments. We want to instill a love of reading in our students, and that starts with them being able to read and access books - that they are interested in - at their reading level. Once a student feels comfortable reading at their level, they are very likely to continue reading and improve their reading levels.
