My students reside in a high-poverty neighborhood and are mostly African-American. My Kindergarten students are five and six year old. School hasn't started but I've had the opportunity to meet families in the community and discuss academic goals for their children. The students are extremely eager to learn. They are excited about learning to read and becoming lifelong writers. In order for them to reach their highest potential and succeed they need tools to help get them there. I was inspired to write and read at an early age by my parents and early childhood teachers and I want my students to experience that same love for reading and writing. This will set a strong foundation that will benefit them as they advance through the education system.
