My students are six and seven year olds who hang on every word and want nothing more than to learn something new. The beauty of First Grade students is that they are ready to learn, ready to read, ready to write. They want to know how to do it! And they want to know NOW! We read every opportunity we get and I encourage students to read when they finish their work rather than play. I encourage parents to read with their children daily. It is the foundation of learning. And the greatest gift for me is the moment when one of these great minds picks up a book in the library and starts to read! WOW! What a inspiring moment for any teacher. Our school does not receive additional funding for things like classroom libraries so it falls on the shoulders of the teachers to furnish them.
