  • A Book Is Portable Magic

    Funded Mar 26, 2025

I am so excited to get the materials I need for my small group reading instruction. I know that myself and my students will be more successful everyday in large part to your generous donation. These resources will be a game changer. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

    With gratitude,

  • Cool kids Deserve A Cool Space

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

Our learning space is a hallway in a building over 100 years old. In the summer it is very hot and in the winter the heat from the radiators is suffocating. We are using the portable air conditioner to cool our hallway area so that we can learn in comfort.

When my English language learners saw the air conditioner, they were over the moon. One of my students said, "I'm so happy! It's so hot out here."

To get a peek inside my classroom would be to view English language learners engaging in reading and writing through structured literacy pedagogy. We have a book club, a writing workshop and we have direct instruction in phonics. We are so grateful for your generous contribution!”

  • Project Our Learning to the Next Level

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

I can't thank you enough for your generous contribution to our classroom. The projector has become an essential part of our day. The students get excited every time we turn it on and get ready to work. They have a routine of pulling over their wobble stools and starting the day with what is projected on the wall. We use it to display our phonics lessons and also to practice reading our words fluently. We could not live without this technology now that we are so blessed to have it in our hallway learning space.

Our hallway learning area is not the ideal space to instruct children. However, with your support and contributions we are slowly making it more accessible to teaching and learning. The ability to project what is on my computer, on to the wall, allows all of my English language learners to see what is being taught. What more could we ask for? Once again, we are so appreciative and grateful for this essential learning tool.”

  • GrapeSEED Curriculum Supports English Learners

    Funded Dec 8, 2022

It has been unbelievably beneficial to have GrapeSEED in our classroom. We teach it everyday for 30 minutes with level 1 & level 2 English learners in first grade. Everyday we learn vocabulary that is essential to English language development. We learn about family, numbers, clothing and so much more. We sing songs and engage in movement activities that keep children engaged and learning English. The physical activity helps to solidify retention and comprehension. If we are learning the word "circle," we will physically get in a circle.

Our students love GrapeSEED! They were so excited to see the materials and meet the characters from the program. They love to hear the stories and songs repeated during the lesson and on the iPad. We are so grateful to your contribution on this project and are super excited to continue to with the GrapeSEED English language development program.”

  • Table Talk

    Funded May 7, 2021

After many months of delays related to COVID supply issues, we finally received our tables! The look beautiful and are the perfect rainbow shape for working with young learners in a small group. We weren't able to use them at the end of the school year but will definitely be using them daily when we return to school in the fall. The children will be so excited and we will love the functionality. We couldn't be more grateful for everyones generosity in support of our classroom and our children.

    Best,

    Sara”

  • iPads Improve Phonics Interventions!

    Funded Jan 24, 2020

I can't thank you enough for making a donation to support my students. The IPad has been an absolutely essential tool during the Pandemic and this world of virtual learning. When I was teaching from home, I was able to use the IPad as a second monitor for screen sharing. Now that we are back in learning, I am able to use the IPad to support instruction. Students are also able to use the IPad for independent practice. Children use the IPad to practice handwriting, read decodable books, and listen to stories that are read to them. They love using the IPad and are so grateful for this addition to our classroom. Thank you again for your generosity and support!”

  • iPads are Incredible!

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

I can't thank you enough for your generous contribution towards the Ipad. It was an absolute game changer during the pandemic. Since I was working from home and teaching my students virtually, it enabled me to use the Ipad as an extra monitor. Our students are returning to the building for the first time on Monday. Yeah!! They will be able to use the Ipad to engage in their phonics lessons and also to participate in reading books online and use other applications that support their learning. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity.”

  • Room Dividers Help Teachers Share Classrooms!

    Funded Jun 19, 2018

We can't thank you enough for your generous donations! Our room dividers have made an enormous impact on the learning environment of the classroom. With the room dividers, three teachers are able to instruct students simultaneously without disruption. The room dividers provide a peaceful area where we can teach our children to read and write. The dividers also provide an area to display instructional tools and student work.

When the students saw the room dividers they were so excited. They love the special area that the dividers provide! We were able to transition from a very disruptive reading environment to a peaceful place to learn. We couldn't be more appreciative and grateful for your contributions to this project.

The next steps for my classroom include using the additional wall space for anchor charts and other instructional tools that will aid students. We will continue to use the room dividers to display student work.

We are sincerely grateful for the donations that made our classroom a beautiful and quiet place to learn!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Smith

  • Read, Read, Read!

    Funded Dec 20, 2017

We can't thank you enough for your contribution to my project! We are currently using the books to study story elements. When students understand how stories work, they not only become better writers, but they also become better readers. The library of books that I now have, because of your generosity, has greatly contributed to the success of my writer's workshop. Learning how to create a memorable character strengthens student's understanding of how character's behave and change in the books we read.

We are currently reading, My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks. Our mini-lesson focus is using similes to describe a character. This book creates family portraits using everyday objects and descriptions of the objects written in similes. After reading the book, we created a list of words to describe a person and an object that that might match the description. For example funny might be represented by a comic strip. The children write 5 words to describe themselves and an object that matches the description. At the end of the lesson we create self portraits using the objects we've chosen and write similes to describe ourselves. The children love this book and the activity!

Once again, we'd like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for contributing to our project. These books are invaluable to us as readers and writers and will be used year after year. We particularly love our Mo Willem's books and just can't get enough of that crazy pigeon!”

  • Keep Us Cool and Learning!

    Funded Dec 16, 2016

Our students absolutely love the new kitchen set and air conditioner! They use the resources everyday! They use the kitchen for dramatic play each day during centers. We use the air conditioner to keep cool and refreshed.

The students were in awe when they saw the materials! They couldn't believe how generous our donors had been to give us such wonderful supplies. They were screaming with excitement and joy!

Our students are all English language learners and love to read and write! Our next project will involve gathering books to encourage students what great authors do to write well. These texts are referred to as "mentor texts" and greatly help to encourage great writers in our classroom.”

I teach English as a second language at an elementary school in South Philadelphia. Our school population is 100% economically disadvantaged and 40% English language learners. Our students come from all over the world, Nepal, Vietnam, China, Burma, Cambodia, Mexico, Central America, and of course, South Philadelphia. Key School provides a nurturing environment for students, staff, and families to enrich educationally, and grow as positive social contributors in our world. We have excellent parent participation and involvement, although most of our parents do not speak English. We use extensive resources to communicate with our parents in their native language. Our students' parents are driven to help their children learn English and succeed in their new home. They aspire to achieve and live the American Dream. However, due to the Philadelphia School Districts' financial crisis, ALL of our educational supplies and materials are limited or non-existent.
