As an ELA teacher, there is a lot of writing that goes on in my classroom. In order for students to complete their best work, I need to model my expectations for quality, as well as help guide student through the writing process. The easiest way to scaffold them toward success is to actually show them how to complete tasks using concrete, visual examples. Whether it's short notes or a full-length essay, my students benefit immensely from being able to actually see what I want them to do. A document camera is a wonderful tool for modeling work for students, and will definitely help my large ESL population, who rely heavily on visuals to guide them. The particular camera that I want also allows me to record, which would give me the freedom to play back guided notes while I actively monitor the room and offer additional assistance. I can also assign students who may have missed a lesson or need to review material to go back and watch a recording. Without a Smartboard in my room, the document camera is an awesome way for me provide more interactive notes to students. Lastly, my students can also use the document camera for their own presentations. Teaching students to speak and present is an important part of my standards, and having the doc camera would make it easier for students to show and discuss their work with classmates.
