All of the research on developmentally appropriate practice suggests the importance of using movement and music to teach. Adding words to music helps aid language development. The rhythm of music helps put the words from the music into long-term memory. Music can and should be integrated across the curriculum--used to teach literacy, math, science, social/emotional skills, etc. Music is something that teachers and children can share in enjoyment while engaging in full body activities that require rhythm and timing--marching, patting, swinging, etc. “Music is the great uniter. An incredible force. Something that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common.”- Sarah Dessen As stated above, with intentional planning, music can aid development in multiple domains: social-emotional, physical/motor development, thinking/cognition, and language/literacy. By using a combination of books (music and movement related), instruments, and body movements, children will be taught a variety of concepts and skills that incorporate universal design for learning- multiple means of representation (hands on, visual, verbal, auditory), multiple modes of expression (singing, dancing, acting, moving), and multiple modes of engagement (capitalizing on student's interests).
