  • Flexible Seating Options for Creative Learners

    Funded Feb 1, 2019

Thank you so much for all the flexible seating options for my classroom. The moment the boxes arrived at the school the students couldn't wait to see what was inside. They love coming in first thing every morning and picking their new seats for the day. They are learning responsibility and making wise choices all with just being able to choose their seats! The mobility has allowed my little wiggle worms to work productively without disrupting others. These items will not only help the students this year, but for many years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Melhado

  • From Plant To Plate

    Funded Aug 29, 2015

I do not know where to start to show our gratitude. During our first few weeks of school boxes upon boxes began arriving in the front office for me and our school. After the first few day the kids began to start asking what was coming next everyday day after lunch, they were so excited to see the supplies that were coming for our garden and our mini recycling center!

Once we had received most of our supplies we started off our first week decorating copy paper boxes with our new markers and paper into recycling bins for many of our classrooms. The next week we constructed a 4 x 8 garden bed using the tools and screws that were provided for us. We filled it with the dirt provided and realized we needed more. We were fortunate enough that members of our local community donated the remaining soil needed.

In the following weeks we spoke about recycling and how important it was to our environment. The kids loved that they were helping our school and the community. But they wanted in the dirt! We choose to plant mammoth sunflowers first, so that the students could see the complete plant life cycle easily (K-2nd graders). It only took a week for our sunflowers to sprout, we are now measuring and tending to our garden weekly. We have also planted tomatoes, pumpkins, and herbs.

Just this week I received approval from administration for another garden bed and will be constructing shortly for more vegetables and flowers! The students are thrilled to watch our garden continue to grow!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Melhado

My students are very multi-cultural and many live in apartment complexes with no yards. Many of them eat breakfast and lunch at school and have no exposure to fresh vegetables. I want my students to not only know the growing process, but be able to identify where and how they get their food.
