This year, our district has been implementing a new curriculum called CPM for mathematics. Students are divided into teams of four and have required jobs or roles during teamwork throughout the class period. The four jobs are: task manager, facilitator, resource manager, and reporter/recorder. As we use this discovery method of learning with several study team strategies that require students to work with their elbow partners or other teams, students need a workspace that will allow all members of a team to model and explain work. The whiteboard Post-it surface will provide my students ample room for team collaboration and increase engagement and creativity in the classroom. My students need to have visual space to organize their problem-solving methods and calculations. Students who are reluctant to start pencil and paper tasks don't seem to have a problem with using dry-erase markers. In addition, working on a table means that it is easy to share thinking and ideas with others, which will spur more "math talk" conversations in the classroom. As I am circulating around the classroom, I can also observe a team's work more clearly and take a picture of the whole table as evidence of learning targets.
