  • Festival of Dreams

    Funded Jul 23, 2023

These resources will help our club, Dreamers and Allies, produce and glow in the dark event to celebrate students in the community that live in the shadows. It will attract children and adults of all ages to the event, and allow us to use the items over again the future when this event becomes an annual event.

The students and staff were so excited to learn that a majority of our supplies needs was funded and will be put to good use. They were in awe of other people's generosity towards them and their goals.

The Festival of Dreams project, will not only celebrate cultures in the community, but allow students to feel welcomed and loved within their own community. All funds donated at the event will do towards a scholarship for a club member. Thank you so much again for all your support!”

    With gratitude,

  • Diversifying Literature Circles

    Funded Jan 12, 2021

Thank you so much for the books! These books will allow for students to see characters that look like them in a book as the main character and defying gender stereotypes. These books will allow students to read about situations they can relate to and those that allow them to show empathy for others.

These books will allow for literature circles, allowing for students to feel more independent and work on skills such as: analyzing complex characters, identifying and defending theme, analyzing word choice and illustrations, making connections, and analyzing author's choices.

I have had students ask to take some of the books home to read them, and that means everything to see them want to read.”

  • Teen Issues Reading Material

    Funded Jul 12, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donations! My students are very excited about reading the book "Shooter" by Walter Dean Myers. They are very excited to discuss the issues that effect them in today's world. They are very appreciative about the time and money you spent on people that you don't know.

They will be reading this book, and comparing it to "The Bowling for Columbine" documentary and the incidents of Columbine High School. They are very excited to begin. Once again, thank you for your generosity and compassion for our class.”

  • The Great Gatsby Adaptive Readers

    Funded Oct 12, 2016

Thank you so much for the support in getting my low-level adaptive readers of The Great Gatsby for my students. These books allow the students to read and comprehend the story and then go back into the regular text in small sections and analyze for symbolism, foreshadowing, and irony. These books will allow the students to be able to read the text independently during class time as well as in groups.

Thanks to these books, reading in the classroom, can now be done in groups rather than whole class reading. My students reading levels prevent them from being able to decode and comprehend the regular text of The Great Gatsby, however with these books they are able to read independently, giving me time to work with small groups of students on different reading skills.

The students enjoy reading the book independently as it makes them feel like they can do it on their own. By the time they get to Junior year of high school they realize they are not where they are supposed to be academic wise, and their confidence suffers as a result. These books have helped build their confidence in their skills, and they smile when they are able to answer higher level thinking questions about symbolism as a result of understanding the story.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Wilson

  • The Scarlet Letter Low-Readers

    Funded Jul 4, 2016

Thank you so much for the low level Scarlet Letter books! Having an actual book is something a lot of schools take for granted. Often my school has to make paper packets of excerpts in replace of books, as we don't have the funds to get books for the students and they can't afford it. Having a book to read from, makes the students feel like they matter, and are worth the money for educational supplies.

These books are written at the 4-5th grade reading level, so this is just enough of a challenge for my students. My students vary in reading levels, but all have learning disabilities; these books make reading a challenging story more enjoyable for them. They are able to read the text at an independent level, which makes them have more confidence in their reading abilities.

The students are willing to read aloud in class because the material is at their reading level, which helps them build their reading skills by practicing on a daily basis. They students are enjoying the story, and comprehending what they read. Thank you so much!”

  • Audio Books Center

    Funded Aug 22, 2015

Thank you so much for our Audio Books Center! This makes the classroom work so much better and makes the kids feel more independent with their reading skills. I am able to have students work in centers now because I can have my Ipad hooked up to the Audio center and have it read the text to the students.

The students feel more independent and comfortable with the Audio Book Center because they can listen to the story being read to them, rather than let their peers know that they struggle with reading. This center allows them to listen and respond to questions on their paper without being singled out by their peers as needing the text read to them. These are high school students, so for them especially having to admit and ask for something to be read to them is a big risk for them to take and this center eases that uncomfortable feeling.

This center has also allowed for a few of my "non-readers" to get one-to-one instruction on how to read while the other kids are on the center listening to a passage and completing work. This machine will allow these students to not only learn the curriculum in class but also to improve their ability to sound out words and read for themselves which is a life changing skill for everyone. Once again, I cannot thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Wilson

  • High Interest Reading Materials

    Funded May 9, 2015

My students were so excited to hear about each book. I had students actually come and ask to "check-out" the book and take it home to read on their own!!!! They were so excited to have fresh, new books. They said they felt like they mattered and someone trusted them with new books. They liked the bright colors and pictures on the covers, which really drew their attention.

As described above, students are requesting to take these books home and read them on their own. We also use them in class daily for silent reading. The students got to pick the book of their choice for silent reading for 20 minutes each day during class. I have never heard the room as quiet as when we do silent reading, and the kids are actually reading!!! Most of the time, I have to ask them 3 times to stop reading so we can do other work for class.

These resources have shown the students that reading can be fun and enjoyable. They do not want to stop reading! These are the same group of students I had a couple of years ago and you could not pay them enough to pick up a book for their own enjoyment. The silent reading daily, not only encourages reading, but it builds their silent reading and how quickly they read. This time also allows me to pull students 1:1, for more direct phonics instruction for my non-readers. I cannot thank you enough for your help!”
