Students in grades 6-8 will read a selected book with their parents. Students and parents will come together to discuss the book. The platform provides a safe and trusting environment for both the parent and student. For example, this year, the families read "Nine, Ten: A September 11 Story Book" by Nora Raleigh Baskin. The book provided an opportunity/platform for families to talk about a tragic event in the United States and the reactions to other events since that event. I would like literacy to be a collaborate effort with families. I feel that it is imperative to have the whole school’s community involved in this process which includes the parent, family, and community. Book Clubs help students become stronger readers by combining collaborative learning with the student-centered inquiry. The Club will invite natural discussions between the parents and preteens that will lead to student inquiry and critical thinking. They will support the diverse responses to text through fostering interaction, cooperation, and collaboration. Ultimately, it will nurture reflection and self-evaluation for both the parents and the preteens. Middle school students have a lot going on in their lives - mentally, emotionally, socially, and physically. The most common thing that parents say, “I don’t recognize my kid anymore.” The book clubs and the literacy night will hopefully continue to bring all of us together as one unit for the sole purpose of meeting the needs of our students. The selection of books is chosen from the Maine Student Book Award Nomination List that come out each year.
