Funded Aug 21, 2021A difficult subject to teach children is history. For special education students especially, historical events can feel distant, sometimes boring, and unrelated to their current lives of video games, YouTube, and whatever new thing is capturing the attention of kids at the time you're reading this. That's where a good biography comes in.
The "Who Was" series profiles a very diverse group of historically and culturally significant people such as Amelia Earhart, Benedict Arnold, Neil Armstrong, Maya Angelou, Steve Jobs, and Michael Jordan.
The biographies are especially popular with students because they're relatively short and feature lots of engaging illustrations. The books also share a common goal: providing a comprehensive yet easy-to-understand biography for students that are fun and interesting to read. Topics become much more relatable and students can start making connections to our past as they learn about the person and the historical setting in which they lived. Most of the books are excellent for teaching and supporting a growth mindset, and readers are encouraged to explore their own potential for changing the world. Thank you so much for funding this project and adding these books to our classroom library.”
With gratitude,
