Two thirds of our Academy's seats are reserved for children who are "child-welfare involved," and the remaining third come from the surrounding school community. The school prides itself in integrating social services and a trauma-sensitive curriculum into an educational program for these children who are either in foster care or receiving preventative services. The items that are requested will benefit our students by helping them to self-regulate during moments of stress, or help them to remain focused in the classroom by addressing their sensory needs. As a behavior specialist, I know these tools have great value in helping children stay safe and learn important coping skills that set them up for success academically, socially, and emotionally. The Therapy Putty can be used as both a fidget for the classroom or during restorative conversations, or as a tool to help students self-regulate in stressful moments. The handheld stopwatches will help us as behavior specialists to track duration so that we can create individualized behavior plans to ensure that students are able to stay on-task and safe in the classroom. The bouncy chair bands will help our students to self-regulate at their seats so that they can remain focused on their work. The marble fidget toys can be used as a fidget in the classroom or during restorative conversations, or it can be used as a tool to help students self-regulate in stressful moments. The stretchy string will be used as a sensory item to promote self-regulation. The tally counters helps us as behavior specialists to record the frequency of a behavior so that we can create individualized plans for students to ensure their success academically, socially, and emotionally. The pencil toppers can be used as a sensory tool in the classroom.
