Currently, the only supplies I have for my Drama 2 classes are a set of textbooks. I don't have access to scripts for my students to hold in their hands and interact with. We will be studying Ancient Greek Theatre, and students will be putting together a group project at the end of the unit on an element of Greek theatre (costuming, masks, etc.), as well as doing research into a specific playwright and seminal work of theirs. After this, we will make a pit stop at Commedia Dell'Arte, and then move into Elizabethan theatre. Students are usually exposed to Shakespeare's tragedies throughout high school - but his comedies have influenced the comedy we still enjoy today. One of the main goals of each style of theatre we study will be connecting the theatre of the past to that of the present - identifying the ways we can still relate to the art of the past. Even though these societies existed centuries ago, by looking to the art that was created, we can find common threads that bind us all. I also face the unique challenge of not currently having my own classroom. The easel pads will allow me to keep track of student contributed work without having to erase it from the white board and lose it forever each day. My Drama 2 students will also be working on scenes and monologues to present at local competitions later in the school year. I'll be hitting up thrift stores and the like in order to add to my stock of scripts and monologue books. As a first year teacher, I came in to discover no money in the department account - so until I fundraise, I'll be doing what I can from my own pockets and the kindness of others.
