Thank you so much for your donation to my students! It has made an impact in so many areas of learning far beyond what I anticipated. Each year the gap between lower income students and technology development grows wider and your donation has made a difference in so many ways. I will list them below in order by class subject so that you can see what I see and the impact you have made. As you read the different areas below, keep in mind that I use a headphone splitter to make accommodations for two, not one, so while I am speaking singularly, know that he/she is teaching someone as they engage in each experience describe, best kind of teaching (like a two headed snake!)
Reading: My students have learned what a website address is, how to use the app version of the website, recognize the icon so their parents could download it onto their phone, and realize that the app version was different than the website version. My struggling students have had additional opportunities to practice their spelling with an app that I installed onto the iPad which helps with phonemic awareness. This also helps with reading/writing across all subjects. In particular, the device has helped a struggling student learn how to read and understand what it can mean to be successful. I have taught his two older siblings, I know they teach in their community and now the youngest can help too!
Writing: My students have learned how to illustrate what they would normally create on a tri fold cardboard display. Although they might just be in first grade, they have learned how to incorporate thinking skills with creation, whereas at home usually they use technology only for games. One student in particular has not experienced success and how to correct errors prior to the project, now he is mentoring other students in my class!
Math: My students have learned how to engage in critical thinking skills with coding skills by simply playing games, which normally would not be encouraged at home. Latest update, my students are teaching each other apps which I have purchased with my own funds.
Science: My students are learning how to use QR codes, create read alouds of their favorite science books and how to navigate our curriculum videos which on a computer, would normally require a lengthy login and password process. They have an additional device to access a wealth of websites which I guide them to!
Social Studies: My students are illustrating (as they would in Language Arts) about things they are learning to share with their class that normally at home, their parents would not have the resources to support. As I ask my students daily, why do we read? To EXPERIENCE AND LEARN about the world around us. While they may not have the means to go to events around our city, I make sure that they are exposed to the culture in our city.
The apps which I used in the above mentioned are: Pic Collage, Spanish Word Wizard, Geoboard, Number Rack, ChatterPix, Raz Kids (which also has an app), QR Reader, Green Screen by Do Ink, and Schoology.
While technology is not the educational answer, at times it is the most important educational medium, which is where my students have the least exposure to. Your donation has given them an opportunity to experience the world. I am sorry I was late in responding, my father has been in and out of the hospital many times. Although it was a hard time for me, I really truly appreciate you for selecting my class.
Keep supporting teachers like me, it means the world to us and to them too! Blessings.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Garcia
