Classroom Library
Funded Aug 22, 2015Thank you for your donation of books to help build a classroom library! Having this library as seen in the photos has increased student's love for reading dramatically. The students were excited to have options for reading rather than being forced to read books that were not of interest and not on their level. Now, that the students have increased their love for reading books, they have been able to write about reading and spreading the excitement of a new book to other students in different classrooms.
When writing about reading, students were able to practice skills such as determining importance and finding the best information that supports their thinking. These skills were being taught to help them master the standard cite evidence after making a claim and writing a brief summary about what has been read.
Reading in the classroom now is structured with a purpose. Students have at least 30-40 minutes of reading, 15 minutes to write about reading and then 2 minutes to talk to their partners about their notebook pages. Every Friday we have a reading marathon where the students get to switch texts that they are reading throughout the period.
Last but not least, I have low level students who were not interested in reading before because it was too difficult and now are reading many high-low books. Now they are reading more and as a result they have moved up two reading levels since September. Thank you for this donation! It has made a huge impact on all my students!”
