  • Special Needs High School Students Will Weave Antibullying Hats

    Funded Apr 7, 2022

The looms to make hats were not available so I used the donations to support sewing lessons, including storage to organize the materials.

My special needs high school students learned how to sew. The students learned to thread a needle using threaders to get the thread into the eye of the sewing needle. Students sorted buttons into two piles: buttons with four holes and buttons with two holes. They learned how to sew on a button that has two holes. Students learned how to make a knot in the thread and secure the thread into the fabric so that it wouldn't unravel. Student sewed buttons onto a piece of felt which I cut into the shape of a tie. Students were able to show their gratitude to their parents and guardians using the greeting card which was decorated with their sewing.”

  • Wiggle Chairs Allow Special Needs Students Movement While Learning

    Funded Jan 13, 2022

Having a variety of appropriate seating options for students is providing a better learning environment for all. By using these ergonomic chairs, students' bodies are able to fidget and move, while they stay focused on the lesson. These chairs give the students' hands and feet a way to be moving, while students are listening and participating in learning.

The stools are very comfortable, and different from regular desk chairs.

My students are able to move around the classroom easily and next we will be working in stations, so having this easy to move, comfortable seating is a great benefit to my classroom.”

  • Special Needs Students Learn to Cook Meals

    Funded Dec 29, 2021

My students are learning how to use kitchen appliances safely. Students learned to make pudding using the cooktop to heat milk. Students are also learning money management. Students planned to deliver milkshakes and fruit shakes for one dollar each. Orders were taken from each class and fake money was given out for students to collect and make change. Students learned about the costs to make the shakes, and we also used leftover fruit and milk from school lunches. The blender was used to make the shakes and students learn to follow steps to use the blender safely. Students delivered colorful masks and snacks along with the shakes, creating a community event for our high school.

Donorschoose and donors like you have provided so much support to me during this school year. I greatly appreciate the gift of time and money, and kind words, that keep me inspired and motivated during these stressful times in education, and in the world. Truly, it takes a village to educate our children.”

Students and teachers enjoyed getting fun, new masks and a treat delivered. Next, students are learning to make fries in an airfryer.”

  • Special Needs Students Learn Measurement and Science Basics

    Funded Dec 15, 2021

Students used these measuring cups and measuring spoons to learn about volume of liquids. Students learned to make pudding by measuring and heating milk. The containers were used to compare liquid volume amounts.

The science activities were fun and educational. Students learned about gears and used vintage beaters which had gears. Students learned about work and how using gears make things easier, comparing a whisk to the beaters with gears.

As students learn more about how tools help us do easier work in the kitchen, having all these simple machine activity kits gives us many ways to teach effective life skills to our students.”

  • Special Needs High School Students Will Learn Money Management

    Funded Oct 11, 2021

Learning about money management was fun for students who enjoyed playing Pay Day and other activities in the kit. The books and lessons supported my classroom lessons.

Students used a budget to plan a community event to "sell" and deliver shakes and snacks to students and teachers in our high school. Students planned to deliver milkshakes and fruit shakes for one dollar each. Orders were taken from each class and fake money was given out for students to collect and make change. Students learned about the costs to make the shakes, and we also used leftover fruit and milk from school lunches.

Next, my students are learning to make fried potatoes in an airfryer, and we plan to have a weekly "fries day" event. Students will learn about shopping, making good fries, taking orders and delivering to classes.”

  • Special Needs High School Students Ready to Rock Acoustic Guitars

    Funded Feb 3, 2022

Students were thrilled when they saw the new guitars. In my classroom, students learned about the parts of the guitar and how to hold the guitar correctly. Many students were able to pick up the guitars and strum the strings. We have a few students that seem to have a musical ear. While these students have not learned to play the guitar with a music teacher, they are able to make pleasant music with the guitars. The guitars are beautiful to look at and they make beautiful sounds, so for some students, just holding the guitars and strumming is very calming and soothing.

  • Special Needs Activities for Daily Living Classroom Needs Refrigeration

    Funded Oct 13, 2021

My students are learning to cook for themselves and a microwave is a great way to prepare foods easily, safely, and quickly. My special needs students have various levels of learning development, so recipes and food preparation can be adapted to allow each student to use the microwave at their level. Students are popping popcorn in different ways using the microwave, with prepackaged kernels and also using microwave safe containers designed for popping loose kernels in single servings.

Students enjoy melting butter, and using other toppings also, for their popcorn. Sharing a popcorn snack with others is a great reward at the end of hard work in my class.

    Thank you for your support.”

  • Special Needs Students Will Learn Food Prep by Microwave

    Funded Sep 24, 2021

When I began the school year, my room was empty! Now we have some furniture and the microwaves that I received with your donations. My high school special needs students are learning microwave safety and they are also learning the best ways to cook foods in the microwave.

My students are also working on their social skills, since sharing and allowing others to go first are a challenge for people who are on the autism spectrum.

Having the microwaves in my big classroom is also creating a social center for our new little high school. Students and teachers are able to interact often to practice social skills, and this is also helping to strengthen and build the community in our school.

    Thank you for your support!”

  • Special Needs Swing Into School With Golf Practice Putting Green

    Funded Sep 20, 2021

In the spirit of the game of golf, Good Manners on the Putting Green was the lesson of the week. As they practiced tapping golf balls into the goal, students used polite conversation using "please" and "thank you" during setup, during practice, and during clean up time. Students look forward to putting practice on the fake grass putting greens, and they are learning to focus and take their time as they putt.

The classroom can also be a mini-golf course using extra carpets and student designed holes. Students are able to complete the mini-course, learning to stay in the group until everyone finishes each hole, coaching and complimenting each other, and learning good sportsmanship. These materials will continue to provide activities for my students to practice and improve conversation skills and appropriate, enjoyable interaction with others.

I hope to take my students on a field trip to a mini-golf course or take my students to play on a driving range or full size course, with some coaching, of course.”

Music is magic! My elementary special education students are grades K to 5, which include students with autism, learning disabilities, low-functioning students, mental retardation and severely emotionally disturbed children. Students are thrilled and engaged with the experiences of learning with music. There are so many entry points to learn using music, singing, instruments, and dance. My students have a broad range of learning levels and learning styles, and music reaches them very deeply and in many different ways.
