  • Executive Functioning = Academic Success

    Funded Aug 10, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity. We have been able to begin new ways of keeping organized. Color coding, check lists, and post-its to help with the use of weekly and monthly calendar planning are proving effective.

During a recent Algebra exam, students were struggling with keeping their different steps separated and their syntax was not accurate. We slipped each page into a dry erase sleeve and they used different color pens to check their work and suddenly, what was difficult became possible!

My students do not want me to post their pictures so we took some photos of the materials you donated as they are BEAUTIFUL!

We are going to begin a unit on a novel and with due dates and a lot of new vocabulary, the organizational tools and ability to work collaboratively to support their executive functioning is greatly improved.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kahn

  • Organization & Academic Success

    Funded Oct 23, 2022

I am so appreciative of your donation to my classroom. Classroom needs are great and the necessary resources unavailable from the school. Teaching special education is rewarding and challenging. Your generosity helps address the challenges and will support my students success. I look forward to being able to share photos of the supplies you made possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kahn

  • Increasing Food Needs

    Funded Oct 18, 2022

Thank you so much for funding the food needs for my students. Teenagers eat a LOT and when they are hungry, it makes school more challenging.

When a 16 year old walks into the room hungry and I am able to say, "here, have a snack!", the relief on their faces is incredible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kahn

  • Spring Nutrition Needs For Learning

    Funded Mar 6, 2022

The number of students who show up to my class hungry, is growing. Daily, I have hungry learners who need a snack and know that they can come to my room for some sustenance.

Although growing students are always hungry, I am seeing an increase in the number of students who need food provided to them at school. Many of my students arrive having not eaten since the day before.

It is not possible to focus and learn when you are hungry. The snacks you have provided make a difference every day.

    Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kahn

  • Games for Inclusion and Social Emotional Learning

    Funded Mar 8, 2022

Thank you so much for the generous donation that allowed me to build a games closet in our room. Educational games are a great way to support community building, cooperation, critical thinking, and logic.

There is not a day that goes by where at least a few of my students need a break from the intensity of their courses and games are an excellent alternative to being on their phones.

I introduce the games to the class at large and then invite them to play a round or two with me. Once they understand the game, they will play independent of me and with various groupings of students.

It is so rewarding to see groups of students working together, enjoying each other's company, especially those who might not traditionally interact.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kahn

  • Back to School Ready

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity. Running a classroom is far more than the school provided materials. With the amount of time students spend at school, providing them with the little touches that make them feel valued and important make a significant difference.

The food has been a huge hit. We have a snack shelf where they are able to help themselves during class, or throughout the school day if necessary. I will be sharing pictures of the space we created! The availability of food is foundational to being able to work hard.

The cleaning supplies are both helpful for the mess that we create (accidentally and as a by product of working) and imperative as we address the need to be COVID conscientious.

    Again, thank you sooo much.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kahn

  • Food For Growing Bodies

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

Thank you for the amazing stock of food for our class shelves. Students come to school hungry all of the time but during these particularly difficult times, many of my students are facing food insecurity and we cannot buy bulk food to share.

All of the individually wrapped snacks you helped provide are feeding hungry teens every day. There are students in each of my classes who show up not having eaten since the day before and they cannot learn until their basic needs are met. The look on their faces when they say they are hungry and I am able to provide something is priceless.

There is not a day that goes by that we are not appreciative of your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kahn

  • Clean Room Clean Hands

    Funded Dec 15, 2021

Thank you so much for your generosity. Being in the classroom is more stressful than ever and there are many staff and students out with Covid. Keeping the room as clean as possible is a top priority.

Your donation has provided us with amazing cleaning supplies that is allowing me to wipe down the desks between classes, mop the floors each day and to sanitize surfaces after each use.

We now have a cleaning shelf and cleaning station. These simple things make such a significant difference in our day to day ability to spend time in the room where keeping a 6 foot distance is not possible.”

  • Print Now - Not Later

    Funded Nov 8, 2021

Thank you so much for the printer! I have included photos to show you how much your gift meant to our class.

In the first photo, you can see the printer on a bookcase in our classroom where we can easily print what we need for teachable moments. The next photo shows a view of about half way to the location where we had to print prior to your donation. Due to the distance, we could not print during class or without at least 10 minutes before or after classes. This made it impossible for me to respond to needs in the moment. The final picture shows the printer from across the classroom for some perspective.

We are so incredibly appreciative of this gift and use it daily!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kahn

  • Tech Tools for Connectivity and Focus

    Funded Oct 18, 2020

Thank you for your generosity. These are trying times and the need for technology has increased. As schools were working at deficit for technology prior to Covid, this has proven especially challenging for student with special needs.

Your contribution has resulted in our ability to provide to bridge the digital divide while focusing on the needs of students with IEPs. ADHD, ADD, and the need to work independently can be supported through technology such as headphones and keyboard overlays with color demarcation.

Again, we are so grateful for your generosity to the students in Oakland Unified.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kahn

I teach special education to students in grades 6-8. They are amazing and challenge me to be a better teacher every day! Throughout the day, I teach math and academic strategies. We are focused first and foremost on being inclusive - the school wide focus on Everyone Belongs is the theme for our year. Building community and making sure that every student knows they they are smart, wanted, and welcome in the room and the school is the foundation for all learning. On a daily basis we push each other to think about our thinking and to understand what it means to be a socially responsible citizen and lifelong learner. We also laugh and enjoy ourselves. Middle school is a hard time and our room is place to be yourself.
