Let's Get Reading!
Funded May 22, 2024thank yo for funding my Donors Choose project to provide great books to my students. As the reading interventionist I want to ensure there are books for all readers and promote independent reading. I plan to begin the 2024-2025 school year with an incentivized reading program. Thank you for making this possible.”

Great Minds Read!
Funded Dec 20, 2022These books will support all students in understanding that there are many ways to be a kid! Students need to see themselves and their friends in the spaces they inhabit. Providing a print-rich environment that represents all kinds of kids will help create empathy and understanding.
We have a diverse community and books are one way to make our classrooms and library more inclusive spaces for everyone.
Your donation will ensure there are gender diverse books and culturally diverse books in my classroom and curriculum to use for instruction! Teachers will also be able to read these books further normalize our beautifully diverse community.”

This classroom project was brought to life by an Anonymous Classroom Supporter and 9 other donors.Fidget and Focus
Funded Dec 11, 2021THANK YOU for donating to my FIDGET and FOCUS project - the chair bands are a HIT! Students have bouncing feet and legs and really seem to enjoy the movement they provide. I love that they are durable and have not broken or ripped.
The reading strips have been used daily by students, they are especially helpful when reading smaller print that can be difficult to follow or has low contrast. Usually 1 student at a table will request a reader and then everyone wants one! I love that a tool typically used as an accommodation for kids with learning disabilities has been accepted as something anyone can use.
The last item we received was individual notebooks, I plan on giving these to students when we begin our research unit as a way to keep their notes organized and in one place.
It has been a crazy year, but I appreciate the support and I know my students appreciate others contributing to our classroom.”

Storyworks for Everyone
Funded Nov 30, 2020Thank you so much for donating to my project. Because of your donation, my 46 virtual students have access to high-quality stories and videos. They have really enjoyed the informational stories on subjects such as the Titanic, tsunamis and tigers.
With February being Black History month, I was able to share a video of a 7 year old girl who participated in the civil rights movement. Seeing this engaging video really helped bring this true story to life. and tomorrow we will read the play written on this subject. Storyworks is so rich in genres and content, and having virtual resources has been very helpful during the pandemic.
Now as students return to a hybrid model, I am hopeful to get the printed magazine in their hands. I know as a child I loved having a subscription to my OWN magazine, I'm looking forward to giving them theirs. I am so thankful to everyone that donated and made this possible for my students, we thank you.”

This classroom project was brought to life by New Castle County and one other donor.I Like to Move It, Move It
Funded Aug 22, 2018to say the students were excited the day the beanbag chairs arrived is an understatement! They patiently waited until I reviewed my expectations for using this comfortable new flexible seating. As a language arts teacher I want my students to read, knowing that they now have more reasons to become nagged in a book is wonderful. In addition to independent reading, the new beanbag chairs are often the first choice of the students for completing class work. They appreciate being able to have seating choices. The beanbag chairs have had an unexpected advantage I didn't foresee as a location for students with behavioral or emotional needs to take a break and decompress. Thank you for providing flexible seating to my classroom and allowing me to provide students with options to create a better learning environment. I've seen the positive impact it has had on my students behavior and learning.”

Fish in a Tree on a Shelf in a Classroom
Funded Aug 15, 2018my students are loving the novel you purchased for our classroom. "Fish in a Tree" is perfect for teaching many of the skills that build reading comprehension. We have used the main character to complete a character analysis and make connections to ourselves. We have also used it as a mentor text to write our own personal narratives.
We read 2-3 chapters a week and it is their favorite time of the day. I do require them to practice applying our reading strategies every time we read by writing any questions they have, making inferences, predictions, and making connections. When we don't read they give an audible groan!
I'm somewhat surprised that the boys are just as involved in the happenings of the female main character as the girls in my class. Ally is a great role model and we are learning how she deals with struggles with bullies and academic struggles. Many are comparing their own relationship challenges to Ally's and empathizing with her difficulties. Thank you again for making it possible for my classroom to read this novel and the story of a struggling student.”
