The Power of Comics!
Funded Jun 10, 2021My students and I are quite grateful for these new books that we can add to our library. In our classroom if a student has completed their classwork early and shown they have mastered the skills we were learning that day, they are expected to read if the teacher does not have other assignments for them. This provides my students a sense of accountability since they must use their free time productively.
Not only that every Friday we have a reading Friday where students can read any book from the class library. Some of my students have expressed their interest in reading comics or mangas instead of traditional novels. Thanks to the new comics that you have provided, my students that enjoy this medium for reading can practice their independent reading skills while still enjoying the literary material.
My students not only are learning to be better readers but learning the joy of reading and becoming responsible adults as they understand the privilege of having these resources in the classroom. Once again I thank you for your support in this project.”

During our Personal narrative unit, students are free to explore various creative writing styles. With these dictionaries they can come up with new rhymes for their poems or use the thesauruses to to diversify their vocabulary in their written stories.
We reading our class text during the week in my classroom but every Friday students are free to choose any book in the library to read. During our creative writing unit students will now have to option to use this reading time to look over the new resources we have gotten them to write their personal stories or poems.”

Our Books Need a Home!
Funded Apr 3, 2020Thank you so much for all your help. Sadly with the current restrictions of not been able to enter the building, we did not have a chance to assemble our new bookcase right away. However, my students and I were so excited to see our books organized and our classroom less crowded with books once we were allowed back to the school.
The bookcase truly made a difference as it helped our reading corner become more cozy and give us more space to be able to read in with all our books. Again we truly appreciate all your wonderful help in making this happen.”

A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words!
Funded Mar 4, 2020Thank you so much for all of your contributions. Reading in my classroom on most days is like any typical English class. We do whole class readings and analyze the text we have read from our school's curriculum. My students' reading levels vary tremendously, to accommodate this literacy gap, we have 3 different leveled texts for every book, article, or story that we read as a class.
To help close this gap we have dedicated every Friday to be a silent Reading Friday because many of my students do not have access to books or do not have much experience reading independently outside the classroom. This gives my students an opportunity to read independently any book that they feel comfortable with. This time dedicated to reading helps my students increase their reading stamina and comprehension of accessible texts.
Every student of mine has a different experience when it comes to reading. However, I have some students who are not the most confident or skilled of readers. Reading a standard novel can be a daunting challenge and also many students feel that standard books have no stories that interest them. These students enjoy comics and mangas because the challenge to read is deterred with images that can provide context and understanding to my students. Also, these texts are rich in stories that my students truly love. I am so happy that my students can grow as readers and enjoy stories that they choose.”
