Science Laboratory Supplies for Back to In Person Instruction
Funded Feb 4, 2022My student were so excited to see new colored pencils. They old ones were starting to break and fall apart. Students started taking very colorful notes and making detailed science drawings for projects. When we were studying crossing over students used 2 colors to represent the chromosomes from mom and dad mixing.
I got a few extra colored pencils that I needed and shared with the chemistry class next door. They made beautiful drawings to model the visual light spectrum and connected each color to the electrons movements to create firework displays.
I already have a set of microscope slides for animal specimens but the students were excited to see how plants look different under the microscope. They notice the green in the chlorophyll and the boxy looking cells.
In the lactase enzyme lab students proclaimed they understood how their body works with lactose intolerance. Some had no idea they could manage the symptoms by just taking a lactase enzyme pill.
Thank you so much for your generation donation. It is especially meaningful because our Principal and School Administrative Assistant (the only people with access to the school credit card) switched schools and we couldn't buy anything for a few months when the positions were filled with new folks.”

Funded Jun 23, 2020My students were able to read about the history of Henrietta Lacks over the summer. As seen in some of the photos, the students really enjoyed learning about her story and the history of medicine, science and prejudice in these areas. The science of history is often only inclusive of white males so learning about the different perspectives is important for a well rounded education.
Furthermore the book provided a way for students to review biology content over the summer in anticipation of taking AP Biology.
A few students had the books returned to sender. I was able to get into my classroom to get a hold of the books and the last 2 students were excited to come to school to pick up their book.
A heartfelt thank you to all my friends, family and community members for donating to make this project possible!”

Compost Breakfast Into Soil
Funded Sep 29, 2019I have started an after school club called "Electric ATP". The students named themselves as ATP is the energy for cells. The club's goal is to reduce energy consumption on our campus. We want to compost because this reduce energy use to transport waste and also improves air quality as less trash is burned. My after school group built the compost and are going to maintain the compost pile. The students were very excited to put together the pieces but learned that putting together "Ikea"-like furniture can come with some rebuilds. At the Leadership Development Showcase, the students showed off their new compost tumbler and explain the connections to climate change.
In the future, the Advanced Placement Biology class will daily monitor the temperature of the compost pile to detect decomposition rates. Because the compost tumbler has 2 sides we can develop a controlled experiment to test different conditions for compost with and without worms.
I'm very excited to up the rigor of the students' learning with real life experiments. Thank you for your contribution.”
