Our school is predominantly minority, and low-income. Our county has one of the highest teenage birth rates in the state. Our town has been in the news lately for wells drying up due to the drought. Unfortunately, the reality is that my students are bombarded with many issues at home that kids shouldn't have to deal with, from their parents being unemployed, to fear of deportation because their parents are undocumented, to having to shower at a relative's house because their home has no water. I would love for STEM/STEAM education to offer them a glimpse of the possibilities that exist out there through education and allow them to be kids.
