We will use these books to support student book choice for various projects in my ELA class. Our classroom library is in desperate need of rigorous, timeless literature. While young adult literature has its place, many of my students have had very little exposure to higher-level, complex novels. The more I ask my students what kinds of texts they think they should be reading, the more they impress me, especially when they tell me that they want challenging books that will allow them to build background knowledge and join the Great Conversation. I truly believe that my students at all levels will rise to the challenge when given the opportunity to engage with these kinds of rigorous texts.
