Out with Baby Bear Goes to School-In With Engaging Text
Funded May 9, 2013Thank you so much for the Scholastic Action Magazines. My students are using the magazines to read about interesting topics they can relate to in their lives.
The first article we read was about Teens and Texting. We read about a study where two teens gave up their phones for 48 hours. We discovered that teens who text too much may lose sleep, become depressed, and have their personal relationships affected in a negative way. My students were very interested in reading this study and some have even decided to conduct this experiment on their own.
We also worked on engaging paragraphs containing prefixes and root words. The students were interested in reading about their favorite celebrities while learning how to identify and determine the meaning of unfamiliar words using this skill.
We are looking forward to our October issue which contains a great article on Anaconda snakes and an online video about the Salem Witch Trials. These materials provide vital background knowledge for the students and help them to understand American history and culture.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Norton
