The bird feeding station, bird bath, and the variety of bird seeds I am seeking will be used to attract birds for students to observe. The binoculars will allow students to view the birds from afar and in greater details. The bird journal notebook will allow students to record their observations. This activity will be able to be done all year round. It can be done inside and outdoors. The window bird feeder will allow students a close up look of birds from within the classroom. The benches requested will provide seating when outdoor viewing the birds from the binoculars.
Bird watching is a cross-curricular activity that combines science, math and language arts. This project will allow my students a hands-on learning experience. Collecting data in the bird journal notebook and researching birds in the bird guide will give my students exciting practice in reading and writing. While observing birds at the feeding station, students will get to appreciate nature. This is important because I have students and parents tell me they do not get to go outside much because they live in an unsafe environment.
The addition of the bird watching area also helps to beautify the school. The bird baths and multi bird feeding station will attract birds while also being attractive. Not only will my students be able to observe this area from outside our large window, but nine other classrooms will as well. Being able to go outside to observe the birds and sit on the benches engages students in learning. This breaks up the monotony of the classroom. It creates a calm, engaging place to learn. Students this year and years to come will have an inspiring and unique classroom experience when they become birdwatchers.
