  • Help! Our Budget Has Been Cut and We Need Supplies!

    Funded Sep 8, 2016

We are now at the end of the 1st semester, and it has been a very challenging year. Budgets for schools in our state have been slashed. There is no money to buy routine supplies like writing utensils, markers, and paper. As much as we would like to teach in a "paperless school," students still need traditional supplies to take notes, practice national exams, write essays drafts, and many participate in other learning activities. Thank for you stepping up and fulfilling our needs for these supplies. Not only have you helped my students, but I have given supplies to other teachers and teachers in need. You have helped to get our school over this rough patch. You have touched the future through our students.”

    Mr. Green

  • The Bible as Literature

    Funded Aug 29, 2016

    Dear Donors,

Much of the literature that our students read and study in one way or another uses quotations, stories and other references to the Bible. However, too many of the students I teach are "Biblically illiterate." They do not know, for example, what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. meant when he writes that he was in Birmingham, Alabama because, like St. Paul, he was answering a "Macedonian call."

I hope to change that using the Bibles and textbooks you purchased for my school. The students read scripture to enlarge their views of the human condition and improve their critical reading skills. We make connections between stories and speeches they have read with the Biblical sources used by the authors. My hope is that they will be able to follow the examples of these great writers and expand their own horizons. Thank you.”

  • We Need Headphones for Learning

    Funded Jan 19, 2016

The students really like the headphones. They are able to explore educational webpage that have videos and sound at their own pace without disturbing other students. We have used them to find out about Shakespeare's world, world folks tales, and epic heroic adventures inside my classroom.

Too often my students feel as if no one cares about them other than their teachers (who are paid to care). It is encouraging to find that others care for them who are not paid anything to care. You have given them a boost as they reach for their goals.”

  • Heathy Snacks for Hungry Kids

    Funded Nov 20, 2015

Each Friday our teachers and staff load up student backpacks with ready to eat food that we get from donors like you. We want to thank you on behalf of our students for adding some healthy snacks to their food bags. Ninety-five percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Often the two best meals and sometime the only meals they get come from our lunch room. When they go for the weekend, many of these students face food insecurity and hunger. They live in a true "food desert" where the nearest grocery store is over 10 miles from where they live. You have helped them, and along with our regional food bank, you are fighting child hunger.”

  • Steampunk Reading Club: Girl Genius Vol 1

    Funded Nov 20, 2015

We had a happy accident with this donation. The book store from whom we ordered the novel, "Girl Genius," did not have the book in stock. So instead of getting that graphic novel, we were able to order several others including "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and "Magnificent Devices" and some other excellent Steampunk novels.

Our students have been devouring these books. They enjoy the lessons they teach about courage, perseverance, and loyalty. We read and discuss new adventures each week. The book club members look forward to sharing their discoveries.

Thanks for making all this possible.”

  • Our First Advanced Placement: We Need Study Aids

    Funded Sep 28, 2015

I am sorry to be so tardy with this note of thanks, but I want you to know that your donations have really helped with our first Advanced Placement classes. Both AP Literature and AP Language have used the aids you provided use to help them prepare for the Advanced Placement tests coming up in May. Even more important than that, our students are preparing for college and careers after high school. Your books are teaching them valuable reading and writing skills. We practice on the books you purchased weekly, and I can tell they have helped our students improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.

So thank you for giving our students a brighter future.”

  • Our First AP Course: Help Us Succeed

    Funded Sep 4, 2015

Our school year is about 1/4 of the way in, and our first Advanced Placement Literature and Composition course is coming along well. We are relying on the support of donors like you to give us the resources we need to be successful. The material arrived and is being used to prepare the students for the challenging Advanced Placement examination. Without your help, we would lack what we need to do this course right.

The students use your study books to assess their progress in the course. The first assessments have come as quite a shock to them because they are not yet used to this level of literary analysis. They now realize how much this course will demand of them. I am certain that using your materials will push them in the direction they will need to go.

    Thank you for your help.”

  • Our First Advanced Placement Class!

    Funded Jun 23, 2015

    My friends,

We are now beginning our first Advanced Placement Literature and Composition course at our school. The students have studied the Greek tragedy "Antigone" and have had "Pride and Prejudice" checked out to them. Your gift is opening up new worlds for my students.

When the students saw the books, they were pleased that someone had provided them brand new learning tools. They now know that someone cares very much for them and for their future.

These books are challenging them to step out of their comfort zone and explore new ideas. Not everyone knows quite what to make of these higher level texts. But I am confident that with patience and persistence, they will rise to the challenge.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Green

  • Magnificent Devices for Our Reading Club!

    Funded Jan 8, 2015

With all the emphasis in this era of education on bubble-in tests, and teaching to the test preparation, it has become increasingly difficult to find time for students to read for pleasure and talk about what they have read. This is why we have "The Steampunk reading Club" in our school. Each we meet to talk about the book we are reading, to do fun activities related to the Steampunk culture, and to get new books to read.

That's were you have come in; you provide the books that keep the club going. These students love to get new books of their very own to keep. For most of them, books are a luxury their families cannot afford. You give them this invaluable gift.

Thank you for your gift of literature. You are helping to create a new generation of readers in our school.”

  • The Steampunk Reading Club: Let's Go on an Adventure!

    Funded Nov 21, 2014

Forgive me for being tardy with this. This has been a difficult school year to get anything that does not deal with end of the year testing going. I can, however, report that we finally got our reading club going, and the students are enjoying the books you provided them. We meet once a week during the students' lunch hour to talk about the books they have read and get new books to read. The students love the high adventure fantasies in the Steampunk genre. Cherie Priest's "Clockwork Century" collection has been a particular favorite. We read "Boneshaker" and are now in the middle of "Dreadnought." I hope to write additional grant proposals to get the next books in the series; though I shall probably have to wait to next year for this.

Thanks to you, we are creating a new generation of readers at our school proving that, given the right books, kids still love reading.”

All adolescents face life challenges. Those from poor and working class families often face enormous challenges. These students go to my high school. I am grateful to the generosity of those who contribute to the DonorsChoose project who continue to open up opportunities my students otherwise could not have. Thank you one and all.
