With funding for this project, I will have a read-aloud library of books to read to students to build character. My students come from diverse backgrounds and need to see diverse characters in the books they read. They also need books that address social and emotional learning needs. The books on my list feature diverse characters and have strong moral messages. These books celebrate kindness, responsibility, empathy, respect, and a plethora of other meaningful traits. So how do I plan to use these books? Well, each morning I do something called a morning meeting. Students gather together on the rug and I read a book to start their day. Then, we discuss the book and what lessons from the story we can apply to our own lives. Students begin their day with a positive outlook and enjoy these stories as they teach valuable lessons. My hope is to have an inspiring collection of books to build strong character among my students. With the books, I am also requesting some bookcases. My classroom currently lacks bookshelf space, and there is nothing left in storage for this new teacher. My goal would be to organize and display my new books to promote a love of literacy and remind students of the great lessons we have learned through shared reading.
