Math Literature for Kids
Funded Sep 17, 2021I would like to take this moment with deep appreciation and thank all of you have contributed to Class 232. Thanks to you our sixth graders now have an abundance of math literature with real world context. With these books my students can now learn about the importance of math and how it connects to the real world they live in. These books have brought about interest in my students in how to problem solve and make sense of a math story.
When students are developing fluency with whole numbers and decimal operations "Delightful Decimals and Perfect Percents" by Lynette Long is a great book to introduce and reinforce the concepts, skills and procedures. In sixth grade, students have many misconceptions about computing with decimals like knowing to line up place values with adding and subtracting or knowing how to multiply or divide by the power of ten when determining the actual product or quotient. This book has many fun activities that address these misconceptions and help students better understand the importance of place value, regrouping, and equivalent division problems. My favorite activity is "Shopping Spree" where students practice subtracting decimals and whole numbers as they pretend to shop for their favorite clothes. This activity was a great way to reinforce subtracting decimals while learning the value of money.
In class 232, reading takes place endlessly with content-rich tasks and engaging math stories. When we are reading these math stories, we read for context first to help us better understand the problem stem. We practice what is called the "Three Reads." This strategy is used every time we come across a word problem that involves comprehension before solving. This reading strategy is normalized in class 232 so that we can be successful and confident in problem solving.
In class 232, students particularly prefer the books revolving money and comics. For example, during the designated reading time in our school, I have a couple of students currently invested in reading "Growing Money" by Gail Karlitz. Luckily we were able to get duplicate copies so that more students can access the content. Along with "Growing Money,' The Manga Math Mysteries comics are also a favorite, especially for those who love the visuals.
Now that we have math literature readily accessible to us we are experiencing math in the moment and have endless opportunities to learn. With the out most appreciation we thank you for your contributions.”
With gratitude,

Funded Oct 24, 2018I would like to thank you all who contributed to our classroom project. It has made a great difference in our classroom setting and learning environment. Thanks to our new bean bag chairs and rug, we have a more relaxed, lounging, cozy environment that has encouraged us to read and learn more comfortably. My students have grown an appreciation for reading now that our class library appears more welcoming than ever. My students were thrilled about this project and demonstrated such gratitude once it arrived. Their eyes lit up with joy knowing that this was for them. They were the masterminds behind where and how it should be set up. They also came to terms that it was a shared space among them all; creating a sense of community. Since then my students have continued to learn the English language through their core classes and interventions. They have made great strides in their education. As we continue to read chapter books and learn our top ten sight words each week, my students could still benefit from resources that engage them in more English speaking dialog. With the proper tools and encouragement this can easily be accomplished.
We'd like to thank you with our sincerest hearts!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Flores
