I want to provide my 2nd graders with choices of how and where to sit that will accommodate their personal needs. Presently, my class is arranged in traditional seating clusters of student desks, chairs, all facing the whiteboard. We are kinetic movers and shakers in grade two; one size doesn't fit all!
What I do in my classroom is based on research and best practices for kids; that's why I want to offer some alternative seating opportunities for my 2nd graders, including balance balls, wobble chairs, stools and lap desks.
Redesigning my classroom is based in research and flexible seating in the classroom takes effort, maintenance and support. Research and anecdotal evidence suggest that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
During my teaching career I looked deeply at how class engagement is impacted by how the room is arranged. Since the beginning, student choice and the comfort of my students has always been paramount to me. Visiting a local coffee shop and seeing how adults and students in my school work showed me, firsthand, that people of all ages have different preferences for where and how they like to focus to get work done. Flexible seating is the way to go to offer my students the best learning environment. Thank you for your support!
