I teach at a bilingual middle school in an urban district. A large percentage of students have been in the school since kindergarten and a substantial number of students head off to high school as balanced bilinguals (in Spanish and English). Many students are first-generation Americans. This year I have 64 energetic 8th graders. Physical science is a class most, if not all, students look forward to. Students enter the room excited for the day's lesson, with a positive attitude, and ready to learn. Seventy-five percent of my students are Hispanic, 14% are white, 4% are black, and 4% are Asian and 3% are multiracial. Thirty-five percent of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Last year, 89% of my students were proficient or advanced on the standardized test in science.
