Every teacher’s ultimate goal is to set students up for future success. As a resident of the Delano community, it is my greatest joy to run into former students working in our community. Unfortunately, for some, that is not always a possibility due to limited experiences with vocational tasks. As a special education teacher, I work hard to find tasks my students are capable of doing while providing multiple opportunities for them to practice tasks until they become independent. Some students need tasks they can perform sitting down or with limited movement. Office skills are a wonderful opportunity to practice routine simple tasks within a relatively small radius. I would like to set up a mini office station in my class. This would allow students to practice, filing, shredding, collating, and copying along with other organizational skills to prepare them to apply for an office job. Preparing students for a successful future not only benefits students, but there is great benefit to our community too. Students benefit from gainful employment and the community gains another skilled worker. Allowing students to practice and perfect their skills in a classroom setting provides opportunities for slow paced step-by-step learning using a task analysis. Skills learned in our school setting can be added to student resumes, creating greater opportunities out in the work world.
