Keeping Track, On The Track

Funded Oct 27, 2021

Our P.S. 139 Running Club and greater school community have benefited from your generous donations which enabled us to purchase a class set of pedometers. Students were thrilled to see the pedometers when they first arrived and were so eager to wear them for their morning laps around the track. They've loved watching their "numbers" increase, so much so that I often have to remind them that its not necessary to check the pedometer between every lap!

An unexpected advantage of the pedometers has been that several students expressed interest in carrying them after our morning club time, and throughout the school day. Offering them this reward and responsibility has been particularly impactful for students with increased movement goals or behavioral challenges. Carrying the pedometers throughout the school day has served as an incentive to participate in classroom activities, physical education, and engage in cooperative play with peers during recess.

Next month, we will be running in a 1500M event alongside the United Airlines Half-Marathon in Times Square. For our third graders in particular, this will be their longest run yet. As we approach the trip, the use of the pedometers to track data will ensure that all runners are physically capable and mentally prepared to accomplish their goals. Your gift has helped my students realize their full potential in running, and acted as a tool through which they practice goal-setting, determination, and self-efficacy.”

With gratitude,
